Producer: Narragansett Brewing Company; Providence, Rhode Island/Rochester, NY
Beer Name: Autocrat Coffee Milk Stout
Price Range: $9.99 (16 ounce Six-Pack)
Style: Coffee Milk Stout
Appearance: Black in color and opaque; thick caramel head on pour and good lacing on glass
Aroma: Roasty with hints of coffee and chocolate
Notes: This beer pours with a thick light-caramel colored head that quickly reduces down as the beer sits, but it coats the inside of the glass. The aroma has just a hint of coffee to me, but the taste is of dark roasted coffee with a hint of dark chocolate bitterness that lingers at the back of your throat. I’m not normally a big fan of milk stouts and I am generally pretty picky about coffee beers, but this one is pretty good. It really captures the coffee essence well and goes all out with a dark coffee flavor that I really enjoy. A lot of coffee beers that I have tried either don’t use a dark enough roast or don’t contain enough coffee. This beer packs a lot of coffee punch into its very mild 5.3% ABV. The body is a little lighter than some other coffee stouts that I have had, but I almost prefer it with this beer since the coffee taste is so dark. This is a very drinkable coffee beer with no real lactose taste despite the “milk stout” label. I would definitely have this one again. My only gripe is that I wish this came in 12 oz size. A 16 oz stout is a bit much for one sitting.
