Beer Review: Ommegang Valar Morghulis

When the hit HBO series Game of Thrones started gaining popularity, Ommegang partnered with the show’s creators to brew a series of beers with ties to the series. So far, the series has given us a great Belgian blonde ale in Iron Throne Blonde, a mediocre Belgian stout in Take the Black Stout, and an interesting red ale with some pepper spice in Fire and Blood. The latest entry in the series is derived from the High Valyrian phrase, Valar Morghulis, meaning “all men must die.” Time for a review!

Virginia Pour House Review: The beer pours a deep reddish brown color with a nice foamy caramel-colored head. The aroma is sweet, with notes of caramel, toffee, ripe fruit, and some dark sugar. The beer is sweet with slight hints of burnt sugar and ripe fruit and a bite of clove near the finish. It is effervescent and it finishes quite dry despite the big aroma and high ABV. There’s a nice, chewy malt backbone and despite the dry finish, the bitterness is cloying. While not my favorite of the Game of Thrones series (that honor would go to Fire and Blood), this is a pretty solid offering. As with many Ommegang beers, this is a pretty safe play but tasty nonetheless. Nice touch printing the companion phrase “Valar Dohaeris” (“all men must serve”) on the side of the cork.
