The first Virginia beer of 12 days makes its way to my glass on the eighth day.
Producer: Starr Hill Brewery
Region: Charlottesville, VA
Style: Imperial Stout
Appearance: Black, not completely opaque, no head
Aroma: Very faint chocolate and cherry
Virginia Pour House Notes: Starr Hill’s Shakedown pours a pitch black, semi-opaque with very little white head that quick dissipates. The aroma is very faint, but contains hints of chocolate and cherry. Notes of semi-sweet chocolate dominate the taste, with hints of cocoa and and underlying cherry throughout. The beer is medium-bodied and surprisingly fizzy with a nice thick mouthfeel and lingering cherry chocolate sweetness. This is a pretty good stout; the body is a little thinner than I like in an imperial stout, but there is a mix of chocolate and cherry.
