Beer Review: Hardywood Bourbon Barrel Barleywine Ale (2016)

Hardywood Bourbon Barrel Barleywine

Producer: Hardywood Brewing
Region: Richmond, VA
Style:
English Barleywine Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrel
Price: $15
IBU: 55
ABV: 6.6%

Virginia Pour House Notes: Clocking in at 13.3% , this Barleywine is very well balanced and masks the ABV very well. From the first pour into a Hardywood Tulip Glass, it demonstrates a hazy amber color,  its thin head dissipates quickly and aromatics of molasses, toffee and subtle hints of bourbon and  oak fills the air. The flavor profile is complex with much of the same molasses and toffee aromatics and are completed with Werthers original candied caramel, sweet tobacco, charred oak and capped with lingering notes of bourbon coated in faint hints of dried fig. Its medium-full body has a smooth, chewy structure featuring medium bitterness. Overall, a great Barleywine. 2016 release
