868 Estate Vineyards; Loudoun County’s Newest Gem

After a recent trip to Breaux Vineyards, I passed an unfamiliar sign for a new winery which had just recently been opened to the public. The sign touted 868 Estate Vineyard and Winery. Intrigued, I immediately Googled and cross referenced the winery on VirginiaWine.org, and quickly found their website. At this time, I read that only winemaker Carl DiManno’s Revolution and Church Creek solo venture wines were available.  I proceeded to email Carl to find out when 868 Estate wines were going to be available, and Carl kindly offered to pour the new wines if I was interested in visiting in the near future.  How could I say no? Just an hour or so from downtown DC, located just off of Route 9 on Harper’s Ferry Road in Purceville, 868 Estate offers outstanding views, attractive farm landscape, and an onsite restaurant called Grandale Restaurant. 868 Estate Vineyards was originally an …

Beer Review: Sierra Nevada Barrel-Aged Bigfoot (2015)

Producer: Sierra Nevada Brewing Company; Chico, CA Style: Barleywine Price Range: $15 / bottle (750 ml) ABV: 11.9% Appearance: Clear burgundy, foamy white head Aroma: Virginia Pour House Review: Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot Ale is one of my favorite barleywines. So when I saw that they were releasing a barrel-aged version this year, I got excited. This is their big, bold seasonal barleywine aged in Kentucky whiskey casks for nearly a year. The beer pours a deep burgundy but is clear with a healthy white head that dissipates upon sitting. The aroma is faint, but some malt and dark fruit stands out. The first sip is big and bold. It attacks the palate with big bitter whiskey notes, with some bitter dark malt in the middle and a lingering overall bitterness. Subsequent sips aren’t quite as alarming and more of the flavor pops through. There’s a lot of whiskey flavor here, …

Gabriele Rausse Winery; If you’re not familiar, you need to be

When holding a casual conversation with anyone who has a hand or two in the Virginia Wine Industry, you can inquire as to their opinion of who are the big names when it comes to producing good wine in the state. Many will ramble off names such as Jim Law, Luca Paschina, and Michael Shaps due to their respective reputation of either producing good wines or consulting for a large portion of new vineyard startups in Virginia. However, there is a name missing in that list – Gabriele Rausse. Many people do not realize that when Gabriele first came to the United States, he landed his first vineyard job stateside with fellow countryman Gianni Zonin and his new startup, Barboursville Vineyards, in April of 1976. Prior to that, Gabriele had completed his University studies in his home country of Italy and began working for Santa Margherita until he enlisted in …

A HUUUUUUUUUGE Congratulations goes out to Ingleside Vineyards for being the ONLY American producer to win Gold in this year’s “Petit Verdot” category at the 2012 San Francisco International Wine Competition. I just received the official press release and decided to share the good news with my readers and again urge you all to visit this vineyard in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Along with their Petit Verdot, Ingleside producers some other gems such as a 2007 Syrah, 2006 Merlot, 2007 Cabernet Franc,  a 2008 Sangiovese (one of my favorites), and a slew of other great wines. Not familiar with Ingleside? Familiarize yourself with my recent post about my visit to Ingleside here: Ingleside Plantation Vineyards; Where history and damn good wines collide I’ve also included below a copy to the official press release. Enjoy, and if you get to visit Ingleside, be sure to let them know that you …

The Winery at Bull Run; The new kids on the block

A great day on the trail this past Saturday.  With one of my best friends from Rhode Island in town with his girlfriend, I decided that it would only be appropriate to visit the Grand Opening festivities of Virginia’s newest winery — The Winery at Bull Run in Centreville. Located right next to Manassas National Battlefield Park, The Winery at Bull Run flaunts itself as the closest winery to Washington, DC. As we drove down the gravel country road and got closer to the winery, cars lined either side of the once gravel (now dirt) path to the parking area. The winery grounds were PACKED! Pretty good sign, though it WAS opening day. We trotted up the walkway and into the tasting room.     I noticed a plethora of picnics and families gathered on the side lawn, all giving off an excellent vibe. As we walked into the tasting …
