Berry Hill Vineyard; Could this be our last visit to Berry Hill?

A few weeks back, I was going through my wine cellar and noticed a bottle of Berry Hill Cabernet Franc from 2010. I remember it being palate shocking and absolutely outstanding from the nose to the finish, and it got me thinking that it has been a while since we all visited Dave at the vineyard. Coincidentally, I received a note from Kurt at WineAboutVA explaining that Dave was selling his house and vineyard so we needed to plan a final visit. Kurt put in the call to Dave and, voila, our last trip to Berry Hill Vineyards was planned. As I mentioned in last year’s visit, Dave Hilty is retired and started making wine as a hobby and for gifts until the tremendous success erupted into a full blown winery operation out of his garage. With just about 2 acres of grapes on the property, a portion of which is …

Berry Hill Vineyard; Virginia Cabernet Franc At It’s Best

For a while I’ve been trying to find time to schedule an appointment to Berry Hill.  My wine tasting excursions are generally spur of the moment on the weekends so it’s often difficult for me to schedule tastings. After speaking with Kurt (@WineAboutVA), Julie (@JulesVine), Erin (@AtTheLamppost), Kathy (@Virginia_Made) and Fred (@ThisIsWine) about some potential dates, we finally nailed down a solid date for our visit. Located just down the road from the Hume area wineries, Berry Hill Vineyards is family owned and operated by the Hilty family and is located near Flint Hill in Rappahannock County.  The property was originally spotted in an issue of Southern Living Magazine by David Hilty and his wife and they immediately fell in love with the home and property. The winery itself is actually encapsulated in the Hilty’s three-car garage. At this point you may be a bit put off but keep reading. …

Missouri Wine: In Norton They Trust; Stone Hill & Adam Puchta Wineries

A few weeks back, my boss gave me the heads up that I would be attending the Midwest Regional meeting in Osage Beach, Missouri. Though the thought of driving three plus hours from the airport in St. Louis wasn’t all that appealing, the chance to try some of Missouri’s offerings (specifically the Norton’s) was more than enticing. After landing, I got my rental and headed down to the Lake of the Ozarks. I did a bit of research which didn’t yield any worthwhile wineries in the area of Osage Beach. After a successful conference, I drove east on US 54 to the scenic MO 94 East towards Hermann, Missouri. First stop on this excursion, Stone Hill Winery. Stone Hill is located in a small, suburban setting in the rustic city of Hermann, just a couple of blocks from the Missouri River edge. This quant city, originally a German Society settlement, …

Tasting Event: Chester Wine Society’s Virginia Wine Vertical Tasting and Exploration

This past weekend, I was invited to pour and lead a discussion in Richmond, Virginia at a Chester Wine Society gathering. My fiance’s mother, Cindi, helped start the wine loving group as a way to explore and expand their knowledge of wines from all over the world, as well as bring together great people. We drove down from DC fresh off of our flight from California wine country and brought two vertical tastings: Chester Gap Cellars Viognier Reserves from 2010-2012 and 2011 Cabernet Francs from Rappahannock Cellars, Fabbioli Cellars, and Berry Hill Vineyard. I also included a bottle of the Rappahannock Cabernet Franc Reserve from 2010 to compare and contrast how vastly different vintage years could be. We all took part in open discussion, enjoyed some great finger foods, and voted on our favorites from the group. We begin first with the vertical tasting of Chester Gap Cellars Viognier Reserve, …

Out of Town: A Day Exploring Temecula’s Wine Country

Last year, I finally took advantage of the opportunity to visit Temecula’s Wine Country. With iPods loaded with crazy throwback tunes, playlists roaring and near perfect weather, my friends and I hit the open road on our way through the hills to Temecula. What was I expecting upon arriving? To be honest, I had no idea. I had been to Stone Brewing Company the previous year so the scenery I was looking for was similar to that. Desert hillsides lined with sparse greenery, palm trees and a lot of rocky soil. As we approached the "Welcome to Temecula" sign, we drove past gorgeous housing communities and neighborhoods, which had me scratching my head. Okay... so, where is wine country? [...]
