The Winery at Bluestone Vineyard; From Personal to Business

The end of 2012 brought a few wild weekend trips in Virginia Wine Country. We expanded our ventures beyond just our usual area of visitation.  The plan was to hit the southern part of the state as well as the Shenandoah Valley.  We tried to visit as many of the wineries as we could each day.   As I will be covering our travels through the Shenandoah Valley in the coming weeks, I decided to follow the write-up on Barren Ridge with a look at Bluestone Vineyard, the final stop on the Shenandoah Valley trip. With daylight dwindling and most of the wineries closing, we went to Bluestone to take part in their standard tasting. For $5 you are able to taste 7 whites and 4 reds.  For $7, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2011 Estate Grown Blue Ice wines are included. I had recently tasted the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon …

Barren Ridge Vineyards; A Quaint Shenandoah Valley Trail Stop

For those of you that haven’t heard, I’ve accepted a writing position with American Winery Guide (www.americanwineryguide.com) covering the trails of Virginia, south of Culpepper. My first review was of Barren Ridge Vineyards in Shenandoah Valley. Below is an excerpt including a link to the full review. I will continue to post articles on the Virginia Pour House Site and alert my readers of new postings on American Winery Guide through the site as well. “The Place:  Located on a high ridge in the Shenandoah Valley, tucked between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, is Barren Ridge Vineyards. This Shenandoah gem, formerly an apple orchard, is maintained by an unusual semi-arid climate that steers rain clouds away from the ridge with the help of its proximity to the two mountains. Hot, dry days and a constant cool breeze at night help set the groundwork for near perfect grape growing conditions. …

Cellar Selection: Elderton Command Shiraz 2005

Producer: Elderton Wines Region: Barossa Valley, Southern Australia Price: $95 Vintage: 2005 Varietals: 100% Shiraz ABV: 14.5% Virginia Pour House Notes: Dark chocolate covered blackberries, light oak and smoky, wild dark berry seduce the nose. The body is full, supple, voluptuous and silky showing dark chocolate, blackberries, blueberry compote, pie crust and hints of light baking spice. Impeccable balance with a back end really displaying the tamed, integrated tannins and blowing you away on the finish with the same tight tannins and a warming, lingering and lengthy curtain call. Deep and complex; seductive yet refined. A lady in the glass, but kinky on the palate. The most velvety structured wine to hit my palate to date – incredibly well produced and a top tier wine.   Producer: Elderton Wines Region: Barossa Valley, Southern Australia Price: $95 Vintage: 2005 Varietals: 100% Shiraz ABV: 14.5% Virginia Pour House Notes: Dark chocolate covered blackberries, light oak and …

Hillsborough Vineyards; A spectacular view from atop Route 9

A brand new review of Hillsborough Vineyards on AmericanWineryGuide that I just finished up! Here is a quick sneak peak and the link to the full article below! “Founded by Zeynep and Bora Baki and their two boys, Hillsborough was a hobby that became a winery when Bora decided to retire to the tranquil hills of Loudoun Valley after 23 years as a successful entrepreneur. Hillsborough consists of 13 acres of vines divided over three plots of land. Planted varieties include: Petit Verdot, Tannat, Petit Manseng, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the French variety Fer Servadou; Hillsborough is one of the only vineyards in Virginia to grow this grape. Over thirty-six aces make up Hillsboroughs property and surround the tasting room where visitors will enjoy the pictureque view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and one of the best views of the Northern Virginia countryside. Pulling off Route 9, a winding driveway leads …

Stone Tower Winery; No Corners Cut When It Comes to Quality

As many of you may have noticed, the Virginia Winery scene has completely exploded with wineries popping up everywhere you look around the state. The problem with this new trend is that a good portion of these wineries are hasty and either purchase grapes from other vineyards or simply rush their vintages out to start producing in order to pay the bills. I can’t knock doing what you have to to pay bills, but there is a certain degree of time and finesse that goes into producing great wine. Stone Tower Vineyards demonstrates perfectly this time and finesse needed to produce great wines. Stone Tower Winery is located in Leesburg, not far down the road from downtown Middleburg. The property was originally owned by Michael and Kristi Huber’s family, and they purchased over 200 acres of the property from the family’s 1400 acres for Stone Tower Winery. Driving up to …

Quick Pour: B-Side Cabernet Sauvignon & Red Blend 2010

When it comes to Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon or blends sourced using much of the same Cab grapes, the wines generally carry a pretty hefty price tag that often post price tags for over $50. If you are to stumble upon a producer that produces similar or competitive quality, that actually captures the quality and essence of the Valley and provides an affordable price tag, well then you’ve hit the lottery.  After reading through Wine Enthusiast’s 30 Cabs under $30 last April, I started hitting my local wine shops in search of a couple of these Cabs to not only see for myself if these producers can offer that Napa Valley charm at the right price, but also to recognize some new and upcoming talent in the wine-making world.  Being a music enthusiast and former DJ, the B-Side brand immediately stood out as a ‘must have, must find’ bottle of …
