New Years Eve Selections: A Virginia Blind Sparkling Tasting 2013

This past March, Frank Morgan (DrinkWhatULike Wine Blog) organized our annual Virginia Blind Sparkling gathering at Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison. Now you may be scratching your head asking, “Why in the world is he just now posting this article?” Well it’s quite simple, you, the reader, would be generally more interested in sparkling wines and champagne style bubbly before New Years, now rather then in March. I, first, would like to thank Frank and the entire staff at Early Mountain for their hospitality and accommodations during our annual event. As far as the format is concerned, we generally collect around 12-15 sparkling wines and toss in a couple of wild cards from outside Virginia to liven up the sparkling and see where Virginia stands compared to those outside of the state. Paul and Warren from VirginiaWineTime, the duo from Swirl, Sip, and Snark, Allan from CellarBlog, as well as …

Missouri Wine: In Norton They Trust; Stone Hill & Adam Puchta Wineries

A few weeks back, my boss gave me the heads up that I would be attending the Midwest Regional meeting in Osage Beach, Missouri. Though the thought of driving three plus hours from the airport in St. Louis wasn’t all that appealing, the chance to try some of Missouri’s offerings (specifically the Norton’s) was more than enticing. After landing, I got my rental and headed down to the Lake of the Ozarks. I did a bit of research which didn’t yield any worthwhile wineries in the area of Osage Beach. After a successful conference, I drove east on US 54 to the scenic MO 94 East towards Hermann, Missouri. First stop on this excursion, Stone Hill Winery. Stone Hill is located in a small, suburban setting in the rustic city of Hermann, just a couple of blocks from the Missouri River edge. This quant city, originally a German Society settlement, …

TasteCamp Day Two; The trip through flavor country

Day one of the TasteCamp event proved to be nothing short of spectacular, and a bit overwhelming. Sounds rough I can imagine you saying yourself. After so many wines, your palate goes numb and all ability to decipher between two reds or whites goes right out the window! That being said, I was eager to see what day two would have in store for us. There we were, rolling up the long driveway into the parking lot of Fabbioli Cellars, and who better to greet us but Doug Fabbioli? Doug started his tour by explaining the many challenges that most of the other wineries had been faced with this year, frost risk and the early heat. The early heat has led the way to a 2-3 week early start to the bud break and growing season. The early bud break extends the season, which increases the chance of insect or …
