Marterella Winery; Welcome back, Welcome Back

I recall being at Mediterranean Cellars some time ago, early on in my exploring days (before this blog), and asking about the vineyard that was across the street. The older woman looked at me and said “Yeah, that used to be a Virginia winery, not anymore.”  It hadn’t dawned on me at the time but this was the winery that had been battling the HOA in their neighborhood to keep their doors open. Marterella Winery Wins Court Battle; A Victory for VA Wine

After over a year or two of battle with her Home Owners Association, Kate Marterella will have something to smile about come Memorial Day weekend, when they finally re-open their doors to the public after a lengthy court battle. A couple of weeks ago, Kate and her family lost Jim Marteralla,  after a hard-fought battle with Melanoma. Though Jerry is no longer with us, his wishes of winning the case were granted,  his legacy, passion, and devotion to his family and Virginia Wine will live on. Below is a brief excerpt from the Washington Post article with the link to the press release. For those interested, the Marterella’s have set up the Marterella Melanoma Foundation in hopes of raising money towards finding a cure for this vicious disease. If you wish to make a donation, you can do so here. Marterella Melanoma Foundation  Virginia Supreme Court rules in favor of …

For those of you who have not heard, the Fauquier Board Of Supervisors passed the anti-winery Ordinance. Vote: AGAINST (1), Sherbeyn; FOR (4), Granger, Stribling, Trumbo, Schwartz. Interested in sounding off to those FOR? Here are their emails, have at it. I first want to thank the Swirl, Sip, and Snark duo for the excellent coverage of the meeting last night. There is a link at the bottom of this post which summarizes the fireworks from the meeting, through the eyes of GrapeEnvyGuy on Swirl, Sip, and Snark Blog. The shocker of the evening had to be Jim Law, of Linden, coming out in support of the ordinance. PAUSE. Let’s be honest, Jim, you started your winery on your family trust, you had wiggle room to fail and got away without relying on events because of your infinite amounts of funding. MOST OF THESE …
