Quick Pour: Paradise Springs Meritage 2010

Producer: Paradise Springs Region: Northern Virginia Region Price: $32 Vintage: 2010 Varietals: 37% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec Virginia Pour House Notes: Paradise Springs dropped a bomb on my taste buds with this complex and balanced Meritage. Ripe tannins and an almost chewy mouthfeel, outline the big flavors of dark fruit (black cherry) and spice with a subtle blueberry, cedar, and toasty plethora on the finish. The aromas carry much of the same on the nose, with more of a spice presence adding light notes of black currant and oak . A great “drink now” wine for those harsh winter days. Pairs well with German Rouladen.   VIRGINIA POUR HOUSE RATING 86 Points

Paradise Springs Winery; What a difference a year or two makes

A couple weeks back my good friend, Chris, was in town with his girlfriend. When trying to decide what we were going to do that Friday afternoon, of course the first thing that came to my mind was visit a winery. I wanted to stay relatively close to my place in Fairfax, and the closest winery that came to mind was Paradise Springs, in Clifton. Yes, folks, Fairfax County has a winery, and a GORGEOUS one at that. After my first visit to Paradise Springs, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Granted, the property was gorgeous; however, I wasn’t overly impressed with the wines I tasted during their grand opening. Almost two years later, it was time to give Paradise Springs another go.   For those of you who haven’t actually been to the winery, allow me to give you a visual. The property sits on a 36 …

New Years Eve Selections: A Virginia Blind Sparkling Tasting 2013

This past March, Frank Morgan (DrinkWhatULike Wine Blog) organized our annual Virginia Blind Sparkling gathering at Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison. Now you may be scratching your head asking, “Why in the world is he just now posting this article?” Well it’s quite simple, you, the reader, would be generally more interested in sparkling wines and champagne style bubbly before New Years, now rather then in March. I, first, would like to thank Frank and the entire staff at Early Mountain for their hospitality and accommodations during our annual event. As far as the format is concerned, we generally collect around 12-15 sparkling wines and toss in a couple of wild cards from outside Virginia to liven up the sparkling and see where Virginia stands compared to those outside of the state. Paul and Warren from VirginiaWineTime, the duo from Swirl, Sip, and Snark, Allan from CellarBlog, as well as …

The Tasting Panel 2012 Tour of Double Golds; Washington, DC

For those of you who haven’t heard, this past year’s San Francisco International Wine Competition yielded a few winners from Virginia wineries and vineyards. The greatest accolade to be received in this competition is the Double Gold Medal. In the 2012 competition, Virginia’s own, Ingleside Vineyards, took home a Double Gold honor for their 2007 Petit Verdot. Please see the footer of this post for a listing of other Virginia wineries to receive awards.  Congratulations to Ingleside on their tremendous accomplishment. Two weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation to Tasting Panel Magazine’s Tour of Double Golds event at the Poste Moderne Brasserie. The event consisted of most, if not all, of the Double Gold winners in the wine categories as well as the San Francisco World Spirits Competition Double Gold winners. A fantastic cheese and characuterie spread was available to all attendees as well as a wine …

Chester Gap Cellars; Some of Summer’s Best

I’ve written about Chester Gap Cellars a couple times before. The Viognier, specifically the Reserve, is to die for. While I was out and about on the trails picking up wine for my 4th of July trip to Rhode Island, I was craving some great whites to drink while at the beach or on the boat. My good friend back home, Chris, shot me a couple hundred dollars to pick up some Virginia Wine for him. This reminded me of Maxim Magazine’s celebrity challenge where they give a celebrity $848 to see how they would spend it. The first place that I went to was Boxwood Winery, where I scooped up a bottle of the 2010 Topiary for my collection and a bottle of the 2011 Rose for the trip. The next stop was Chester Gap Cellars. After a recent visit to Paradise Springs, Chris was ranting about the Petit …
