Stone Mountain Vineyards; Live from the observation deck

With the fall foliage on the cusp of it’s color peak, most tourists and native Virginians are looking to enjoy gorgeous views, brilliant fall colors and, of course, great Virginia wine. My latest trip to the Charlottesville area opened my eyes to one of the BEST views that I have encountered in Virginia in a long time. This vineyard, Stone Mountain Vineyards, located just north of Charlottesville captured the fall foliage and my breathe at the same time.  I’m not going to lie, the dirt road to the winery at the top of the mountain, is beyond gorgeous but treacherous as well.  So be sure to use caution when weaving left and right up the road. As you approach the parking lot, you will find yourself hitting the brake pedal hard and gasping at the amazing views that are the back drop to the ski lodge style observation deck, also …

Ramulose Ridge Vineyards; A New Venture on Smith Mountain Lake

A new review on Ramulose Ridge Vineyards for AmericanWineryGuide! Check out an excerpt below, with the extended tasting notes just below that, and the full photo spread on our FaceBook Page (www.facebook.com/vapourhouse)! Enjoy! “A few weeks back, my fiance and I headed down to meet her family and family friends at Smith Mountain Lake. The car was packed with our belongings and, of course, a case of local wine. As we made our way down Route 29, we noticed a few wineries that I had yet to visit, including a couple close by Smith Mountain Lake. One was Hickory Hill and the other was not on any Virginia Wine maps. As it clearly had just opened to the public weeks ago, there was this gorgeous property greeting visitors with its steel carved sign bearing the name “Ramulose Ridge Vineyards.” After talking it over with the little lady, we agreed that we would swing by …

Early Mountain Vineyards; Committed to the Very Best of Virginia, for Virginia

Another AmericanWineryGuide article, this time about the Steve and Jean Case owned winery in Madison, Virginia, Early Mountain Vineyards. A couple of months ago, a large gathering of Virginia Wine bloggers united to tour and taste at Early Mountain, and see what they had to offer to Virginia. Take a peak at just what we concluded…and be sure to check out the Spring/Summer menu below!   “Early Mountain opened its doors in June of 2012 in a newly transformed and renovated building with detailed stone work, airy ambience, open wood raftered barn style ceiling, swanky tile work, vintage farm tables and chairs, and gas fireplaces scattered about the facility. Shortly, after opening the facility, Early Mountain introduced their “Best of Virginia” tasting. Rather than simply offering Early Mountain produced wines, they hand-selected and feature wines they deem as the best wines from around the Commonwealth of Virginia. Wineries such as …

Stone Tower Winery; No Corners Cut When It Comes to Quality

As many of you may have noticed, the Virginia Winery scene has completely exploded with wineries popping up everywhere you look around the state. The problem with this new trend is that a good portion of these wineries are hasty and either purchase grapes from other vineyards or simply rush their vintages out to start producing in order to pay the bills. I can’t knock doing what you have to to pay bills, but there is a certain degree of time and finesse that goes into producing great wine. Stone Tower Vineyards demonstrates perfectly this time and finesse needed to produce great wines. Stone Tower Winery is located in Leesburg, not far down the road from downtown Middleburg. The property was originally owned by Michael and Kristi Huber’s family, and they purchased over 200 acres of the property from the family’s 1400 acres for Stone Tower Winery. Driving up to …

Gabriele Rausse Winery; If you’re not familiar, you need to be

When holding a casual conversation with anyone who has a hand or two in the Virginia Wine Industry, you can inquire as to their opinion of who are the big names when it comes to producing good wine in the state. Many will ramble off names such as Jim Law, Luca Paschina, and Michael Shaps due to their respective reputation of either producing good wines or consulting for a large portion of new vineyard startups in Virginia. However, there is a name missing in that list – Gabriele Rausse. Many people do not realize that when Gabriele first came to the United States, he landed his first vineyard job stateside with fellow countryman Gianni Zonin and his new startup, Barboursville Vineyards, in April of 1976. Prior to that, Gabriele had completed his University studies in his home country of Italy and began working for Santa Margherita until he enlisted in …

Out of Town: A Day Exploring Temecula’s Wine Country

Last year, I finally took advantage of the opportunity to visit Temecula’s Wine Country. With iPods loaded with crazy throwback tunes, playlists roaring and near perfect weather, my friends and I hit the open road on our way through the hills to Temecula. What was I expecting upon arriving? To be honest, I had no idea. I had been to Stone Brewing Company the previous year so the scenery I was looking for was similar to that. Desert hillsides lined with sparse greenery, palm trees and a lot of rocky soil. As we approached the "Welcome to Temecula" sign, we drove past gorgeous housing communities and neighborhoods, which had me scratching my head. Okay... so, where is wine country? [...]

New Years Eve Selections: A Virginia Blind Sparkling Tasting 2013

This past March, Frank Morgan (DrinkWhatULike Wine Blog) organized our annual Virginia Blind Sparkling gathering at Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison. Now you may be scratching your head asking, “Why in the world is he just now posting this article?” Well it’s quite simple, you, the reader, would be generally more interested in sparkling wines and champagne style bubbly before New Years, now rather then in March. I, first, would like to thank Frank and the entire staff at Early Mountain for their hospitality and accommodations during our annual event. As far as the format is concerned, we generally collect around 12-15 sparkling wines and toss in a couple of wild cards from outside Virginia to liven up the sparkling and see where Virginia stands compared to those outside of the state. Paul and Warren from VirginiaWineTime, the duo from Swirl, Sip, and Snark, Allan from CellarBlog, as well as …
