New Years Eve Selections: A Virginia Blind Sparkling Tasting 2013

This past March, Frank Morgan (DrinkWhatULike Wine Blog) organized our annual Virginia Blind Sparkling gathering at Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison. Now you may be scratching your head asking, “Why in the world is he just now posting this article?” Well it’s quite simple, you, the reader, would be generally more interested in sparkling wines and champagne style bubbly before New Years, now rather then in March. I, first, would like to thank Frank and the entire staff at Early Mountain for their hospitality and accommodations during our annual event. As far as the format is concerned, we generally collect around 12-15 sparkling wines and toss in a couple of wild cards from outside Virginia to liven up the sparkling and see where Virginia stands compared to those outside of the state. Celebrating DC Wine Week / VA Wine Month; Washington Wine Academy Event

Last Friday the Washington Wine Academy and DC Wine Week 2012 hosted an event at the Washington Wine Academy, pouring nothing but Virginia wines and 2012 VA Governor’s Cup winners. Over the course of the two hour event, three pouring stations, as well as a huge cheese and charcuterie spread, were packed into the small space that was populated by approximately 100 people.   My excitement mounted at the ability to taste all of the 2012 VA Governor’s Cup winners, especially the 2009 Hodder from Glen Manor, as it has been sold out for quite sometime. I was a bit disappointed that I missed the opportunity to try the RdV Rendevous 2009, as I still have a hard time coming to grips with the $40 tour/tasting fee and minimum $60 per bottle cost at RdV.  But, now, this was my chance to taste it for free.
