Beer Review: Alewerks Bitter Valentine

Producer: Alewerks Brewing Company; Williamsburg, VA Style: Double IPA Price Range: $10 / bottle ( oz) ABV: 8.3% Appearance: Rich orange amber, small white head Aroma: Citrus, pine, grass, hints of orange, mango, pineapple Virginia Pour House Review: Alewerks releases this big double IPA every year around Valentine’s Day. This year I found it a little later than normal, but judging by the appearance and aroma I don’t think anything will be lost here. The beer pours a deep rich amber, almost orange, with a thin white head. I get big citrus and floral notes in the aroma, with hints of orange, mango, and pineapple, but also an earthiness and some pine. The first sip is super bitter, but there is a lot of flavor here. Lots of citrus bursts through first, but also some floral notes and an earthy finish. The big citrus notes dominate the flavor, with some …

Quest for the Perfect Pumpkin Beer: #7-9

The Quest for the Perfect Pumpkin Beer continues with #7-9 in the countdown! #9: Saucony Creek Maple Mistress Producer: Saucony Creek Brewing Company; Kutztown, PA Beer Name: Maple Mistress Price Range: $5 / draught (10 oz) ABV: 9.5% Appearance: Clear, robust amber Aroma: Pumpkin, maple, cinnamon Virginia Pour House Review: I decided to get a bonus pumpkin beer while at The Deli in State College and ordered this amazingly-named beer after the wife took a shot on it. The aroma on this beer is incredible. Rich notes of pumpkin and maple syrup stand out with a hint of cinnamon underneath. The beer is a clear, bold amber color with almost no head. The taste features strong notes of maple syrup in the beginning and middle with big pumpkin and spice in the finish. It has a great mouthfeel, coating the palate with sweet maple and pleasing pumpkin pie flavor. This is probably one of …

Rosemont Vineyards; An Up and Coming Star in Virginia Wine

After a weekend trip for a friend’s wedding in North Carolina, we decided to make a pit stop just over the border in Southern Virginia, to Rosemont Vineyards. Rosemont is located just a stone’s throw from Lake Gaston/Easton’s Ferry on the 450 acre Rosemont Estate, which has been in the Rose family since 1858. Many past generations farmed vegetables and dairy, as well as commodities such as tobacco, hay,  corn, peaches and cattle.  And now, ever since 2003, wine grape can be added to that list.  In 2003, 16,000 vines were planted with another 16,000 vines planted the following year; Around 22 acres of grape with a total consisting of about 16 different varietals. In 2006, construction of the winery, production facility, and tasting room began; and by September of 2007, Rosemont produced their first vintage. The winery building resembles an early American manor home.  Like we did, you would …

Greenvale Vineyards; Rhode Island History Captured in Wine

The Greenvale Vineyard, a historic farm, is located along the Sakonnet River in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a few miles north of downtown Newport. Greenvale was originally started by Cortlandt Parker and his wife, Nancy, who grew grapes as a hobby in the 1960s. It wasnt until later on that Greenvale began growing grapes for another local winery known by many as Sakonnet Vineyards. In the early 90s, the Parkers’ daughter, Nancy Parker Wilson, and her husband William made it their mission to develop their own brand of wines – under the Greenvale name. In 2000, under the leadership of Parker’s architect son-in-law, William, the old Greenvale Farm stable was transformed into a tasting room and was opened to the public for tastings and tours. This gorgeous piece of property truly is a gem and produces some excellent wines under wine maker Richard Carmichael, formerly the assistant winemaker at Williamsburg Winery. …
