Spring Break: Portland, Day 3

Our third day in Portland featured lots of walking, but the thing with Portland is that everything is really walkable. We walked from our hotel in downtown pioneer district all the way to Mississippi district and we still only walked about 3 miles, never in dangerous areas. So we learned that you can walk from downtown to Mississippi district, but you will be walking for a long time if you do. We eventually made it to what turned out to be one of my favorite places in Portland, Ecliptic Brewing. Ecliptic Brewing Company 825 N Cook St, Portland, OR 97227 Well, it’s certainly out there but I suspect that is how they like it. Ecliptic featured some of the best beer I had in Portland, including their Hypernova triple IPA and their Orbiter IPA. Their Orange Giant barleywine and Oort Imperial Stout also hit the spot, as well as a massive 1/2-pound …

Sierra Nevada: An East Coast Compound with a NorCal Feel

Sierra Nevada officially opened the doors to its North Carolina brewery/restaurant/bar in March of 2015 after a phased approach starting last summer. While I’m not the biggest fan of their beers overall, I still thought I had to visit while I was in the Asheville area. I made the long trek from the cabin outside of Canton through Asheville to Fletcher, about an hour drive. I have to admit that I was under the impression that the brewery was closer to Asheville proper, but it actually lies about 17 miles south of the city, which is about a half hour drive. As we pulled through the gate, I quickly realized why it was located so far from the city. It seems to be by design. After winding through a half mile of forest and over a small stone bridge, we pulled up to the parking lot, which was appointed with …

Beer Review: Sierra Nevada Barrel-Aged Bigfoot (2015)

Producer: Sierra Nevada Brewing Company; Chico, CA Style: Barleywine Price Range: $15 / bottle (750 ml) ABV: 11.9% Appearance: Clear burgundy, foamy white head Aroma: Virginia Pour House Review: Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot Ale is one of my favorite barleywines. So when I saw that they were releasing a barrel-aged version this year, I got excited. This is their big, bold seasonal barleywine aged in Kentucky whiskey casks for nearly a year. The beer pours a deep burgundy but is clear with a healthy white head that dissipates upon sitting. The aroma is faint, but some malt and dark fruit stands out. The first sip is big and bold. It attacks the palate with big bitter whiskey notes, with some bitter dark malt in the middle and a lingering overall bitterness. Subsequent sips aren’t quite as alarming and more of the flavor pops through. There’s a lot of whiskey flavor here, …

Beer Review: Victory Old Horizontal (2013)

I was in Wegmans last week and noticed that they had Victory Old Horizontal, one of my favorite seasonal barleywines. Only when I got home and looked at the label did I realize that I actually had bought was a 2013 Old Horizontal, 15 months in the bottle already. I love this beer fresh, but have never had an aged version, so here goes!  Victory Old Horizontal (2013) Producer: Victory Brewing Company; Downingtown, PA Beer Name: Old Horizontal Style: Barleywine Price Range: $12 / bottle (22 oz) ABV: 11% Appearance: Dark amber, clear, foamy off-white head Aroma: Very malty, dark fruit, sweet Virginia Pour House Review: The beer pours a dark amber but is perfectly clear with a healthy off-white head. The aroma is all malt, with dark fruit notes like fig standing out. The aroma has a sweetness to it as well. The first taste is malty with dark fruits …

Beer Review: Rogue New Crustacean vs. XS Old Crustacean

Let me get one thing out of the way. I’m not a huge fan of Rogue’s beers in general. I have had a few fantastic beers from Rogue, but the rest have been very average and all of them have been overpriced. However, when I got two bottles of Rogue for my birthday recently I thought it would be fun to pit them against each other since they are similarly named. The beers are Old Crustacean, a strong barleywine that has been around for a while, and New Crustacean, a fairly new offering by Rogue that is supposed to be… Beer Review: Rogue New Crustacean vs. XS Old Crustacean Beer Review: Rogue New Crustacean vs. XS Old Crustacean 2014-05-19 Virginia Pour House Review Overview Rogue New Crustacean - 85 Rogue XS Old Crustacean - 80 83 82.5 Virginia Pour House Rating User Rating: Be the first one !
