Dogfish Dash 2014

Dashing for beer!

I was recently in Rehoboth Beach, DE for my annual late September “beach” vacation. The last weekend in September every year is the Dogfish Dash, Dogfish Head’s 5k/10k race. This year was my fourth in a row of running the race and the event has been growing amongst my group of friends every year. The first year it was just a few of us, but this year we had enough people to rent two houses between about 15 of us. We came in on Saturday morning and after spending some time in Rehoboth watching college football, we decided to head to Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats for dinner. Who else is sitting at the table next to us than the man himself, brewery owner Sam Calagione. We weren’t going to bother him during his dinner with family, but my brother-in-law simply gave him a quick “thank you” as he walked …

Beer Review: Evil Twin Brewing Company Yin & Yang

When I see beers from Evil Twin Brewing Company in the store, I usually walk past them. I have sampled a couple and liked what I tasted, but they are generally too pricey for my taste. Of course, to every rule there is an exception. In this case, it is Evil Twin’s companion beers, Yin and Yang. It’s rare to find these beers together at the same time, so when my local beer store (thanks Wine Cabinet!) hosted a tasting, I had to go try them. I liked them enough to buy a four-pack of both and do a writeup… Beer Review: Evil Twin Brewing Company Yin & Yang Beer Review: Evil Twin Brewing Company Yin & Yang 2014-09-08 Virginia Pour House Review Overview Evil Twin Yin - 95 Evil Twin Yang - 80 Evil Twin Yin & Yang Blend - 100 92 91.7 Virginia Pour House Rating User Rating: …

Adroit Theory Brewing Company; The latest brew craze in Purcellville, Virginia

I enjoyed a nice weekend with the in-laws over Memorial Day as we went to DC’s Summerfest Beer Festival, visited Lost Rhino, and checked out a new brewery tucked all the way out in Purcellville, VA. The brewery is called Adroit Theory Brewing Company. Anyone that is familiar with the location of Corcoran Brewery will know exactly where this place is, since it’s basically right down the street. We pulled into a fairly industrial-looking parking lot and followed the tiny signs until we saw this: This instantly brought me back to my trip to San Diego last May when I visited a brewery called Mike Hess Brewing Co., which was run basically out of a storage garage. This place was slightly bigger, but not by much. Adroit Theory started out by contract-brewing through a company called Beltway Brewing Company in the Sterling area. Basically, you pay them, and they help …

Beer Review: Starr Hill Brewery Snowblind Dopplebock

Producer: Starr Hill Brewery, Crozet, Virginia Beer Name: Snowblind Price Range: $9.99 (Six-Pack) Style: Dopplebock ABV: 7.4% Appearance: Dark brown, almost black and opaque Aroma: Hints of coffee, molasses, and burnt oak Notes: When I cracked open the bottle, it actually foamed out of the bottle. I quickly poured it into a glass where it shows a small off-white head that quickly dissipated with next to no lacing on the glass. The taste is of burnt malts at the front with hints of molasses and coffee toward the back that linger on the palate. It has a little bite up front but eases toward the finish. It sweetens as it warms and is surprisingly smooth for a 7.4% ABV. Not bad, but not as good as my favorite doppelbock, Troegenator. Beer Review: Narragansett Brewery Autocrat Coffee Milk Stout

Producer: Narragansett Brewing Company; Providence, Rhode Island/Rochester, NY Beer Name: Autocrat Coffee Milk Stout Price Range: $9.99 (16 ounce Six-Pack) Style: Coffee Milk Stout ABV: 5.3% Appearance: Black in color and opaque; thick caramel head on pour and good lacing on glass Aroma: Roasty with hints of coffee and chocolate Notes: This beer pours with a thick light-caramel colored head that quickly reduces down as the beer sits, but it coats the inside of the glass. The aroma has just a hint of coffee to me, but the taste is of dark roasted coffee with a hint of dark chocolate bitterness that lingers at the back of your throat. I’m not normally a big fan of milk stouts and I am generally pretty picky about coffee beers, but this one is pretty good. It really captures the coffee essence well and goes all out with a dark coffee flavor that …

Beer Review: Narragansett Brewery Del’s Summer Shandy

Producer: Narragansett Brewing Company; Providence, Rhode Island/Rochester, NY Beer Name: Del’s Summer Shandy Price Range: $9.99 (16 ounce Six-Pack) Style: Shandy ABV: 5% Appearance: Clear and golden in color, very little head with no lacing Aroma: Light with hints of lemonade Notes: Del’s Shandy is a lemon shandy, based on Del’s frozen lemonade, which was started in Italy in 1840 and brought to Rhode Island in 1948. The aroma gives off strong lemonade notes and you can almost imagine getting a frozen lemonade from a Del’s stand on a hot sunny day. The lemon in the taste is toned down and the beer is very smooth and light-bodied. This would be a great beer for the beach or pool on a summer day.  It is very lightly carbonated and refreshing with almost no lacing on the glass. This isn’t a beer that I would normally drink, but I could sip …

Beer Review: Stone Brewery Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers

Producer: Stone Brewing Company; Escondido, California, United States Beer Name: Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers Price Range: $8.99 Style: Porter ABV: 5.9% Appearance: Black, mostly opaque, slight effervescence, small head of foam Aroma: Very faint smoky scent mixed with very faint spiciness but almost no aroma at all Mouthfeel: Effervescent and dry Taste: Smoky upfront with subtle, pleasant spiciness from chipotle; finishes very dry but spice remains    To be clear, I’m not a huge fan of Stone Smoker Porter. However, they have done some interesting things with the beer. I think of porters as being generally very malleable. They are easy to bend in different ways with the addition of one or two ingredients because they are generally fairly plain. Stone Smoked Porter isn’t an interesting beer. But when paired with vanilla bean, or in this case chipotle peppers, it becomes something else entirely. Despite the fact that this …

Beer Review: Rogue New Crustacean vs. XS Old Crustacean

Let me get one thing out of the way. I’m not a huge fan of Rogue’s beers in general. I have had a few fantastic beers from Rogue, but the rest have been very average and all of them have been overpriced. However, when I got two bottles of Rogue for my birthday recently I thought it would be fun to pit them against each other since they are similarly named. The beers are Old Crustacean, a strong barleywine that has been around for a while, and New Crustacean, a fairly new offering by Rogue that is supposed to be… Beer Review: Rogue New Crustacean vs. XS Old Crustacean Beer Review: Rogue New Crustacean vs. XS Old Crustacean 2014-05-19 Virginia Pour House Review Overview Rogue New Crustacean - 85 Rogue XS Old Crustacean - 80 83 82.5 Virginia Pour House Rating User Rating: Be the first one !
