Producer: Elderton Wines Region: Barossa Valley, Southern Australia Price: $95 Vintage: 2005 Varietals: 100% Shiraz ABV: 14.5% Virginia Pour House Notes: Dark chocolate covered blackberries, light oak and smoky, wild dark berry seduce the nose. The body is full, supple, voluptuous and silky showing dark chocolate, blackberries, blueberry compote, pie crust and hints of light baking spice. Impeccable balance with a back end really displaying the tamed, integrated tannins and blowing you away on the finish with the same tight tannins and a warming, lingering and lengthy curtain call. Deep and complex; seductive yet refined. A lady in the glass, but kinky on the palate. Ram’s Gate Carneros Chardonnay 2011 Producer: Ram’s Gate Winery Region: Carneros AVA, California, United States Price: $36 Vintage: 2011 Varietals: 100% Chardonnay ABV: 13.3% Virginia Pour House Notes:  Gorgeous, deep golden color with moderate aromatics of mellowed fruit, candied apple, asian pear and tropical fruit. Subtle floral and light buttery undertones lead to an extremely creamy palate with light, toasty oak, almond, vanilla and light, buttery notes. The back palate shows off nice toast qualities with fresh acidity and a toasted oak with a hint of spice on the finish. Excellent, medium-full bodied structure that is creamy, soft and very smooth. Not overly buttery with more toasty quality but enough of that creamy structure and mellowed fruit. This Chardonnay is drinking perfectly right now. Fresh, floral nuances compliment and balance the fruit-forward notes of apricot, golden apple, and pineapple with spice undertones that taper into honey-dipped hints of brioche and angel food cake from mid to back palate. Quick Pour: Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages 2005

Producer: Chateau St. Jean Region: Sonoma County AVA, California, United States Price: $64.99 Vintage: 2005 Varietals: Cinq Cépages (“Five Varieties”) is a Bordeaux-style blend consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (9%), Cabernet Franc (7%), Malbec (4%), and Petit Verdot (3%). Each component is aged separately for two years in small French oak barrels (47% new) before blending. Once the wine is assembled, it spends six months in the bottle before release.(14% ABV) Virginia Pour House Notes: Complex and layered with plenty to decipher on the nose as it tosses around powdered dark chocolate, raspberry and star anise followed by notes of smoldering oak and forest brush. The flavor profile is smooth and concentrated with fruit forward qualities to start showing cassis, wild berries, and dark cherry that tapers mid palate but is reinforced by notes of white pepper, spice, cumin, with warming, neat, and balanced tannins on the seemingly endless finish. Vertical Tasting: A Rappahannock Meritage Vertical Event

It’s really no surprise that one of my favorite Virginia wines out there is Rappahannock Cellars Meritage. Year after year, this bold blend created in old-world Bordeaux style continues to impress people with its plethora of layers and firm tannin structure — even the lackluster 2011 vintage that most of Virginia struggled with. After discussing with Allan Delmare about having a small gathering for a vertical tasting, we nailed down a date and invited a few people over to the Pour House to rate our favorite vintages starting with the 2007 and ending with the 2012 barrel sample. Myself, Allan, Allan’s girlfriend Lauren, my fiancé Jaymie, and wine consultant extraordinaire Bryan Toy of Dionysos Consulting Group each tasted the vintages and discussed our critiques.
