A local tasting with Bennett Sewell of Bodega Familia Sewell Winery

One of my favorite places to visit in my neighborhood in Fairfax, Virginia is Swirl & Sip Wine Shop, which recently opened in the Mosaic District. Not only does this shop pay particularly close attention to special, hard-to-find wines, they constantly strive to learn and to teach others about these unique wines directly from the winemaker or owner’s mouth. Quick Pour: La Finca Mendoza Malbec 2011

Producer: La Finca Malbec 2011 Region: Mendoza, Argentina Price: $4 Vintage: 2011 Varietals: Malbec Winemaker Notes: The vineyards of Finca La Celia lie in the foothills of the Argentine Andes. Stunning purple color. Its bouquet is intense, rich in blackcurrant, vanilla and spices. On the palate the soft and succulent ripe fruits follow through with a surprising delicacy. The tannins are silky, coming subtly from the forefront and giving a lingering finish. This wine has been aged in oak barrels for 3 months. This is a wine to enjoy with meat dishes and pasta with meat and tomato sauces. Virginia Pour House Notes: Oh where to begin! Well for $4, what can you really expect?  Though Trader Joe’s does have the tendency of producing some excellent, inexpensive wine for their customers, this one falls flat. Lack of body and structure and over the top tannins make it impossible to pair …
