Tasting Event: Chester Wine Society’s Virginia Wine Vertical Tasting and Exploration

This past weekend, I was invited to pour and lead a discussion in Richmond, Virginia at a Chester Wine Society gathering. My fiance’s mother, Cindi, helped start the wine loving group as a way to explore and expand their knowledge of wines from all over the world, as well as bring together great people. We drove down from DC fresh off of our flight from California wine country and brought two vertical tastings: Chester Gap Cellars Viognier Reserves from 2010-2012 and 2011 Cabernet Francs from Rappahannock Cellars, Fabbioli Cellars, and Berry Hill Vineyard. I also included a bottle of the Rappahannock Cabernet Franc Reserve from 2010 to compare and contrast how vastly different vintage years could be. We all took part in open discussion, enjoyed some great finger foods, and voted on our favorites from the group. We begin first with the vertical tasting of Chester Gap Cellars Viognier Reserve, …

Quick Pour: 2010 Rocca Trentatre Rosso Red Blend

Producer: Rocca Family Wines Region: Salento IGT, Puglia, Italy Price: $5.99 Vintage: 2010 Varietals: 33.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33.3% Merlot, 33.4% Montepulciano Virginia Pour House Notes:  This 2010 blend titled “trentatre” or “33” consists of 33.3% equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Montepulciano. The grapes are harvested from the Rocca Family’s vineyard in the Apulia region of Southern Italy (the Southeast portion of the boot near the heel facing the Adriatic Sea). I randomly selected this wine at Trader Joe’s one evening because I was intrigued by the blend and the price point. I was completely caught off guard, and overwhelmed by the depth and soft nature that was presented to my senses. The nose was teased with aromas of ashed wood, mocha, espresso bean, licorice, and black currants in layers. While along the front of the palate, this young wine was greeted by dark plum, espresso, and mocha adding soft plush tannins and a smooth …

Vertical Tasting: A Rappahannock Meritage Vertical Event

It’s really no surprise that one of my favorite Virginia wines out there is Rappahannock Cellars Meritage. Year after year, this bold blend created in old-world Bordeaux style continues to impress people with its plethora of layers and firm tannin structure — even the lackluster 2011 vintage that most of Virginia struggled with. After discussing with Allan Delmare about having a small gathering for a vertical tasting, we nailed down a date and invited a few people over to the Pour House to rate our favorite vintages starting with the 2007 and ending with the 2012 barrel sample. Myself, Allan, Allan’s girlfriend Lauren, my fiancé Jaymie, and wine consultant extraordinaire Bryan Toy of Dionysos Consulting Group each tasted the vintages and discussed our critiques. The results were consistent among the five of us, and, now without further delay, here are the results in order of favorite to least favorite, as …

Rappahannock Cellars; Recent visit(s) and Anniversary Celebration!

Do any of you recall the Governor’s Case winners from last year? It should come as no shock that a bottle of Rappahannock Cellars 2010 Meritage was included in there. What should come as a shock is why there were not more Rappahannock Cellars wines included. Visit after visit, release after release, Rappahannock continues to separate themselves from the rest of the pack of great wine producers in the State of Virginia. With well over 1,000 Wine Club Members, a newly renovated Members section, and glorious perks of being a Member, I think it’s time to ask yourself a question. If you aren’t a Member of Rappahannock Cellars, what is wrong with you? This weekend marks the 12th Anniversary of Rappahannock Cellars and the celebration consists of live musical performances by Marie Miller and Pigs from a Gun on Saturday and Sunday, as well as catered food by Jack Knuckle …
