The 2013 Finger Lakes Riesling Release Launch | Fox Run, Lamoreaux Landing, & Bellangelo; How do they fare?

Producer: Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars Region: Finger Lakes AVA, New York, United States Wine: Red Oak Vineyard Riesling Price: $19.99 Vintage: 2013 Varietals: 100% Riesling; (12.8% ABV) Virginia Pour House Notes: Built on a backbone of crisp apple and pear aromas showing off zesty citrus undertones followed by crisp delicious apple flavors up front with puckering tartness from front to mid-palate while going the distance with light notes of lime and a crisp minerality and finishing with more ripe fruit and mineral notes in an off dry manner. The finish really shows off the tart lime qualities that were shown early on, but are subtle towards the back palate. Overall, a decent Riesling, but could use some time to settle that tart quality. Producer: Fox Run Vineyards Region:  Finger Lakes AVA, New York, United States Wine: Dry Riesling Price: $18 Vintage: 2013 Varietals: 100% Riesling; (11.2% ABV) Virginia Pour House Notes: Petrol and rubber duck (new) plastic with …

Berry Hill Vineyard; Could this be our last visit to Berry Hill?

A few weeks back, I was going through my wine cellar and noticed a bottle of Berry Hill Cabernet Franc from 2010. I remember it being palate shocking and absolutely outstanding from the nose to the finish, and it got me thinking that it has been a while since we all visited Dave at the vineyard. Coincidentally, I received a note from Kurt at WineAboutVA explaining that Dave was selling his house and vineyard so we needed to plan a final visit. Kurt put in the call to Dave and, voila, our last trip to Berry Hill Vineyards was planned. As I mentioned in last year’s visit, Dave Hilty is retired and started making wine as a hobby and for gifts until the tremendous success erupted into a full blown winery operation out of his garage. With just about 2 acres of grapes on the property, a portion of which is …

New Years Eve Selections: A Virginia Blind Sparkling Tasting 2013

This past March, Frank Morgan (DrinkWhatULike Wine Blog) organized our annual Virginia Blind Sparkling gathering at Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison. Now you may be scratching your head asking, “Why in the world is he just now posting this article?” Well it’s quite simple, you, the reader, would be generally more interested in sparkling wines and champagne style bubbly before New Years, now rather then in March. I, first, would like to thank Frank and the entire staff at Early Mountain for their hospitality and accommodations during our annual event. As far as the format is concerned, we generally collect around 12-15 sparkling wines and toss in a couple of wild cards from outside Virginia to liven up the sparkling and see where Virginia stands compared to those outside of the state. Paul and Warren from VirginiaWineTime, the duo from Swirl, Sip, and Snark, Allan from CellarBlog, as well as …
