Tasting Event: Chester Wine Society’s Virginia Wine Vertical Tasting and Exploration

This past weekend, I was invited to pour and lead a discussion in Richmond, Virginia at a Chester Wine Society gathering. My fiance’s mother, Cindi, helped start the wine loving group as a way to explore and expand their knowledge of wines from all over the world, as well as bring together great people. We drove down from DC fresh off of our flight from California wine country and brought two vertical tastings: Chester Gap Cellars Viognier Reserves from 2010-2012 and 2011 Cabernet Francs from Rappahannock Cellars, Fabbioli Cellars, and Berry Hill Vineyard. I also included a bottle of the Rappahannock Cabernet Franc Reserve from 2010 to compare and contrast how vastly different vintage years could be. We all took part in open discussion, enjoyed some great finger foods, and voted on our favorites from the group. We begin first with the vertical tasting of Chester Gap Cellars Viognier Reserve, …

Quick Pour: Hosmer Winery Chardonnay 2012

Producer: Hosmer Winery Region: Finger Lakes AVA, Cayuga Lake AVA, New York, United States Price: $14 Vintage: 2012 Varietals: Chardonnay; (13.1% ABV) Virginia Pour House Notes: A faint golden hue and subtle aromatics, this youthful Finger Lakes Chardonnay is showing some impressive complexities. Layers upon layers tout nuances of floral, lime, toasty oak, apricot, and pineapple notes, while showing a nice medium-bodied structure and crisp mineral finish. With a little bit more bottle age the expressive acidity on the palate will settle down a little bit and develop really nicely. Short to medium length finish and velvety smooth. Not nearly as zesty and lengthy as the 2011, but showing potential to make its way into the weekly dinner rotation as an everyday red wine. Producer: Cocobon Cellars Region: Livermore Valley AVA, California, United States Price: $7.99 Vintage: 2012 Varietals: Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Petit Sirah; (12.5% ABV) Virginia Pour House Notes: Jammy plum and dark berry fruit forward nose showing a smooth, …

Quick Pour: Pearmund Cellars Sweet Petit 2010

Producer: Pearmund Cellars Region: Northern Virginia Price: $20 Vintage: 2010 Varietals: Petit Verdot Winemaker Notes: Made from Petit Verdot. Light tannins with beautiful flavors of blackberry. Slightly sweet. Serve chilled. Virginia Pour House Notes: Here is the story as told to me at the winery:  The fermentation process started on the Petit Verdot, then it stopped. The winemaker tried to restart it unsuccessfully and decided that it would be acceptable to bottle it and sell it as a sweet wine in its current form.  At the time, my palate was favoring sweet wines so it actually wasn’t that bad. If you are looking for something on the dessert side but not quite as sweet as a port or ice wine, in red form, this maybe something for you. Chocolate and blackberry charge the nose with blackberry toppling your taste buds and firing a cannon of sweet chocolate flavors that are …

Quick Pour: Oak Crest Moonlight Sonata 2010

Producer: Oak Crest Vineyard and Winery Region: Eastern Virginia / George Washington Birthplace AVA Price: $14 Vintage: 2010 Winemaker Notes: A German Rhine wine is the stylistic target for this 100% Symphony wine. Serve cold as a sipping wine or with spicy oriental food.   Virginia Pour House Notes: If you are looking for a borderline dessert style wine, minus the extreme sugar explosion and heavy mouthfeel, the Moonlight Sonata is just right for you. The 100% Symphony, grape produced, wine is marked by sweet tropical flavors with low acidity and floral aromas accenting the nose. Light notes of grapefruit contribute to this mango mouth bomb and is perfect for sipping by itself on a warm summer/fall day. For more information on the Symphony grape read about it here. VIRGINIA POUR HOUSE RATING: 84 Points
