Quick Pour: Lamadrid Single Vineyard Malbec 2009

Lamadrid Single Vineyard Malbec 2009 Producer: Lamadrid Estate Wines Region: Agrelo, Mendoza, Argentina Price: $17.99 Vintage: 2009 Varietals: 100% Malbec ABV: 14% Virginia Pour House Notes: Aromas of garden-fresh herbs and blackberry with a medium-bodied palate complimented by ripe cherry flavors with dried blackberry undertones. The mid palate picks up white pepper nuances and spice box while balanced by fine tannins and spice to keep the fruit-forward flavor structure in harmony to finish ripe, yet masculine. This wine was a tough find years ago, but is more readily available and a steal at its current price point, especially for a Single Vineyard Argentinian Malbec. Quick Pour: B-Side Cabernet Sauvignon & Red Blend 2010

When it comes to Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon or blends sourced using much of the same Cab grapes, the wines generally carry a pretty hefty price tag that often post price tags for over $50. If you are to stumble upon a producer that produces similar or competitive quality, that actually captures the quality and essence of the Valley and provides an affordable price tag, well then you’ve hit the lottery.  After reading through Wine Enthusiast’s 30 Cabs under $30 last April, I started hitting my local wine shops in search of a couple of these Cabs to not only see for myself if these producers can offer that Napa Valley charm at the right price, but also to recognize some new and upcoming talent in the wine-making world.  Being a music enthusiast and former DJ, the B-Side brand immediately stood out as a ‘must have, must find’ bottle of …

Quick Pour: The Hague Winery 2008 Meritage Reserve

Producer: The Hague Winery Region: Chesapeake Bay Region (Virginia) / Washington Birthplace AVA Price: $28.95 Vintage: 2008 Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot Virginia Pour House Notes: A gorgeous bouquet of cedar, smoke, candied fig, and dark fruit spreads from the nose to the palate with cherry being the standout adding subtleties of spice and leather mid-palate. Complex and intricate structure with silky smooth tannins and an ultra smooth finish that leaves luscious nuances of spice box and vanilla lingering behind.  Big bodied, aromatic, and a plethora of qualities propel this gem to the top part of my ‘Virginia Favorites’ list.   VIRGINIA POUR HOUSE RATING 89 Points

Blenheim Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Producer: Blenheim Vineyards Price: $20 Vintage: 2010 Winemaker Notes: Velvety accents of plum, raspberry and lilac charm the nose while flavors of lively tangerine and red apple dance across the palate. French and American oak aged (70% for 12 months; 30% for 3 months). Virginia Pour House Notes: Many people are under the impression that Virginia should be producing Cabernet Sauvignon like that of California. Well, given our climate, Virginia vintners do the best they can with the conditions provided them. This isn’t California, folks, this is Virginia, and we produce some damn good wine. Many vintners are persevering and exceeding all challenges thrown at them, and this wine is the perfect example of hard work and great Virginia wine production.  Big jammy blackberry and plum aromas fill the sinuses with a gorgeous floral bouquet. Smooth blackberry and dark fruit provide a supple back drop to this medium bodied flavor …
