Return of the Blog – New Approach, Backlogged Reviews, and More.

First and foremost, our sincerest apologies about our absence during the last year. We have been fortunate to have a large following over the past several years that has brought in over 100,000+ readers. We want to thank all of you! We have expanded beyond Virginia, touching many places in the United States and even spun off a travel blog to cover our International journeys. So where do we go from here? Many readers have submitted suggestions of a more digital approach. Monthly review pieces versus daily postings, video production, food pairings, wine country itineraries and even a podcast.

EVENT: Second Annual Virginia Wine & Cheese Tasting to Fight MS

Here at Virginia Pour House, I’m all about supporting charity events and helping others in need to the fullest extent I can. After attending a blind sparking tasting at Early Mountain Vineyards (my second year attending), I spoke with Allan over at CellarBlog about his work with some other Virginia wineries to hold on an event supporting the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. I told him I would spread the word and I am, after all, a man of my word. The Second Annual Virginia Wine & Cheese Tasting to Fight MS is a great event (and very inexpensive given the enormity of the cause). I strongly urge all of you, the readers, to put May 5th on your calendars and attend this charity event. For online ticket purchasing, there will be a pre-registration online, but you can also purchase tickets at the door for no additional cost. The details are …

Fabbioli Cellars; Tre Sorélle Vertical

Recently, my girlfriend and I joined Fabbioli Cellar’s Wine Club. The fact that Doug Fabbioli has come close to mastering Italian varietals was part of the big attraction to joining the club. One of the first club events that we received an invitation to was the recent Tre Sorélle vertical tasting, held in Fabbioli’s Barrel Room. The Tre Sorélle variety is Doug’s Bordeaux style blend, consisting of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot. The tasting consisted of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 vintages with a barrel sample of the 2012 Merlot (which is still fermenting and will eventually be blended with the other two varietals to create the 2012 Tre Sorélle). As we took our position in front of our carefully arranged wine glasses on the U-shaped table in the Barrel Room, Doug began to share some information about each of the vintages and what to expect from each year. …

Celebrating DC Wine Week / VA Wine Month; Washington Wine Academy Event

Last Friday the Washington Wine Academy and DC Wine Week 2012 hosted an event at the Washington Wine Academy, pouring nothing but Virginia wines and 2012 VA Governor’s Cup winners. Over the course of the two hour event, three pouring stations, as well as a huge cheese and charcuterie spread, were packed into the small space that was populated by approximately 100 people.   My excitement mounted at the ability to taste all of the 2012 VA Governor’s Cup winners, especially the 2009 Hodder from Glen Manor, as it has been sold out for quite sometime. I was a bit disappointed that I missed the opportunity to try the RdV Rendevous 2009, as I still have a hard time coming to grips with the $40 tour/tasting fee and minimum $60 per bottle cost at RdV.  But, now, this was my chance to taste it for free. Sadly, they had poured all …
