25 Pours of Christmas (Pour 4): Shaw Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Shaw Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Producer: Shaw Vineyard & Winery Region: Seneca Lake AVA, Finger Lakes AVA, New York, USA Price: $18 Vintage: 2011 Varietals: 100% Sauvignon Blanc ABV: 13% Virginia Pour House Notes: Notes of citrus and grass lead the nose with bright acidity shining on the palate adding nuances of honeysuckle up front followed closely by crisp, white peach and hints of lemongrass. A creamy palate texture and a smooth finish with just a touch of zest towards the back palate concludes New York State white gem. We originally opened this bottle in the Spring, but it had held up very well and still had bold acidity. This would be perfect for a traditional Italian Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes.   Shaw Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Producer: Shaw Vineyard & Winery Region: Seneca Lake AVA, Finger Lakes AVA, New York, USA Price: $18 Vintage: 2011 Varietals: 100% Sauvignon …

New Years Eve Selections: A Virginia Blind Sparkling Tasting 2013

This past March, Frank Morgan (DrinkWhatULike Wine Blog) organized our annual Virginia Blind Sparkling gathering at Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison. Now you may be scratching your head asking, “Why in the world is he just now posting this article?” Well it’s quite simple, you, the reader, would be generally more interested in sparkling wines and champagne style bubbly before New Years, now rather then in March. I, first, would like to thank Frank and the entire staff at Early Mountain for their hospitality and accommodations during our annual event. As far as the format is concerned, we generally collect around 12-15 sparkling wines and toss in a couple of wild cards from outside Virginia to liven up the sparkling and see where Virginia stands compared to those outside of the state. Paul and Warren from VirginiaWineTime, the duo from Swirl, Sip, and Snark, Allan from CellarBlog, as well as …

Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars; My First Finger Lakes Visit

A few months back, a mid-winter celebration with some of my girlfriend’s family in Rochester, New York brought me a golden opportunity to visit the Finger Lakes Region of the country. After speaking to a few other writers and suggestions of other wine enthusiasts, I was without a doubt that Dr. Frank would be the number one visit of the trip.   This man wasn’t just a pioneer for wine in New York, but also for wine in the Northeast and the United States as a whole. Dr. Frank was a professor of plant sciences with his Ph.D. specifically in viticulture. After arriving in this country in 1951, Dr. Frank moved upstate from New York City to take a position at Cornell University’s Geneva Experiment Station. Since then, his years of research paid off as Dr. Frank was the first individual to successfully grow European Vinifera grape in the Northeastern …

Upstate New York; A tour through the Finger Lakes Region

As many of you may notice, I do primarily focus on Virginia but do visit other wine making areas of the country. I have also over the past year or two met and become friends with many other oenophiles and/or influenced friends of mine to become one.  A good friend of mine from work went on a vineyard tour in Upstate New York this past Memorial Day weekend, and wanted to share her experiences in the Finger Lakes Region with all of my readers. Obviously, I was delighted to have the opportunity to diversify the blog a little bit and to read about her experiences in another region of the country that I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. With that being said, I bring to you a guest feature from my friend known as “Jeannie”. Finger Lakes = Fantastic! My daughter is a college student in Upstate New …
