Beer Review: FiftyFifty Eclipse Imperial Stout (Buffalo Trace)

fiftyfifty eclipse buffalo trace

FIFTY FIFTY ECLIPSE (BUFFALO TRACE) Producer: FiftyFifty Brewing Company; Truckee, CA Beer Name: Eclipse Imperial Stout (Buffalo Trace) Style: Imperial Stout Price Range: $35 / bottle (22 oz) ABV: 11.9% Appearance: Solid black, foamy tan head Aroma: Dark malt, cocoa, whiskey, faint honey sweetness Virginia Pour House Review: Light bitterness from dark malts, cocoa and coffee notes with nice blend of whiskey in the middle. Some bitterness and slightly boozy from whiskey but blends nicely with the dark chocolate and cocoa notes. Very faint sweetness from the honey, but almost indistinguishable. Nice mouthfeel, not thin and very little bitterness in the aftertaste. More honey notes come through the longer I sip. This is one fantastic beer. Beer Review: Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout

SUNDAY MORNING STOUT Producer: Weyerbacher Brewing Company; Easton, PA Style: Imperial Stout Price Range: $3-4 / bottle ( oz) ABV: 11.3% Appearance: Pitch black with a small coffee-colored head Aroma: Mostly coffee and roast, with a hint of bourbon Virginia Pour House Review: Weyerbacher hails from just about an hour away from where I grew up in PA. Their beers are mostly hit or miss for me, as mentioned in my review of their Maple Mistress Pumpkin Ale. So, how does Sunday Morning Stout stack up? It pours a pitch black color with a small foamy coffee-colored head. The aroma is mostly coffee with some roasted malts underneath and just the slightest hint of bourbon. The first taste bursts with rich bourbon, mixed perfectly with dark-roasted coffee and bitter black roasted barley notes. This beer is also viscous, leaving a coating behind in the finish. Subsequent sips are just as …

Happy New Year from Asheville, NC!

New Year’s Eve. It is a holiday that I normally spend going out with a bunch of friends to a fancy, semi-formal event. This year, though, I am spending the holiday at the cabin in the mountains outside Asheville, NC that my in-laws recently purchased. After an 8-hour road trip and a slightly scary trek 4,000 feet up the mountain, we arrived. And we caught the last minute or so of sunset. Of course, since it was a special occasion, I enjoyed New Year’s with a few rare and vintage beers with the family. We started on Tuesday night, when my sister-in-law and her husband (who just so happens to be a close friend) stopped in on the way down to NC. The first beer we cracked was a local one from Hardywood, and a variant of one I have already had this winter season. Hardywood Bourbon Barrel Gingerbread Stout …

12 Beers of Christmas: Oskar Blues Ten Fidy (Day 12)

The 12 Beers of Christmas comes to an end with a full-bodied Imperial Stout from Oskar Blues Brewery. Oskar Blues Ten Fidy Producer: Oskar Blues Brewery; Brevard, North Carolina Beer Name: Ten Fidy Style: Imperial Stout Price Range: $3-4 / can (12 oz) ABV: 10.5% Appearance: Thick, black, opaque, with foamy cappuccino head Aroma: Malty, chocolate, cocoa, Virginia Pour House Review: The 12 Beers of Christmas concludes today with a big stout from Oskar Blues Brewery. The can implies that this beer was brewed in Brevard, North Carolina, but Oskar Blues got started in the town of Lyons, Colorado in 1997. They were also the first craft brewery to can their beer and now all their beers are sold in that format. The beer pours a thick, black with a foamy cappuccino-colored head. There is a lot of big, bitter, cocoa in this one and it coats the palate. It checks in at …

Beer Review: Evil Twin Brewing Company Yin & Yang

When I see beers from Evil Twin Brewing Company in the store, I usually walk past them. I have sampled a couple and liked what I tasted, but they are generally too pricey for my taste. Of course, to every rule there is an exception. In this case, it is Evil Twin’s companion beers, Yin and Yang. It’s rare to find these beers together at the same time, so when my local beer store (thanks Wine Cabinet!) hosted a tasting, I had to go try them. I liked them enough to buy a four-pack of both and do a writeup… Beer Review: Evil Twin Brewing Company Yin & Yang Beer Review: Evil Twin Brewing Company Yin & Yang 2014-09-08 Virginia Pour House Review Overview Evil Twin Yin - 95 Evil Twin Yang - 80 Evil Twin Yin & Yang Blend - 100 92 91.7 Virginia Pour House Rating User Rating: …
