Quick Pour: Stone/Ecliptic/Wicked Weed Points Unknown IPA

Stone’s latest entry in their collaboration series includes contributions from Ecliptic Brewing in Portland, Oregon and Wicked Weed in Asheville, North Carolina. It is not clear by the description what each brewer contributed to this beer, but it is highly complex. This is a blend of two beers: a hoppy double IPA and a Belgian tripel. The tripel was transferred into barrels that originally housed red wine and were subsequently used to age tequila. After four months, the tripel was blended with the freshly-brewed IPA at one-fourth tripel to three-fourths IPA. It is definitely unlike anything I have ever heard of. Onto the review! Producer: Stone Brewing Company; Escondido, CA; Ecliptic Brewing; Portland, OR;  Wicked Weed; Asheville, NC Style: Double IPA/Belgian Tripel/Barrel-Aged Beer Price Range: $10-12 / bottle (22 oz) ABV: 9.5% Appearance: Clear, deep golden, small white head Aroma: Grass, straw, spice, coriander, grapefruit, orange, wheat Virginia Pour House …

A Tale of Two Sculpins

I mentioned in a recent post that I scored some great beer from a friend’s beer shop in PA. Two of those beers are varieties of Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA, grapefruit and habanero. Having had both on tap at Ballast Point during my trip to California last summer, I thought I would do something different and review each one, then get crazy and combine them for a grapefruit-habanero blend. Here we go! Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin IPA Producer: Ballast Point Brewing Company; San Diego, CA Style: American IPA Price Range: $3-5 / bottle (12 oz) ABV: 7% Appearance: Bright, clear, golden, with small white head Aroma: Grapefruit, orange, mango Virginia Pour House Review: The beer pours a perfect clear golden color with a small white head. The aroma is mostly grapefruit, but there are other citrus aromas at work here from the west coast hops, including some mango and orange. The first …

12 Beers of Christmas: Green Flash Double Stout (Day 6)

The sixth day of Beermas features an enormous, tasty stout from the West Coast! Green Flash Double Stout Producer: Green Flash Brewing Company; San Diego, CA Beer Name: Double Stout Style: Stout Price Range: $3-4 / bottle (12 oz) ABV: 8.8% Appearance: Solid black, almost no head Aroma: Roasted malt, sweet, milky Virginia Pour House Review: The beer pours a solid black with a very small tan head. The beer smells of dark malts but is also sweet and milky. There are golden oats that lend an almost honey-like aroma as well. The first thing I notice about this beer upon tasting it is that it’s thick. It’s not a stout for the faint of heart. There is some light bitterness in the middle with hints of dark chocolate and coffee, but very faint. These flavors are more present as the beer warms up. Overall it’s very smooth for being such a …

Beer Review: Stone Stochasticity Project: Hibiscusicity

Stone hibiscusicity

Stone Brewing Company started an experimental line of beers in the last year called the “Stochasticity Project” (see Wikipedia for definition). It’s a way for them to experiment with different ingredients and make some off-the-wall beers, trying out some new ideas along the way. The series has already given us a gem in Grapefruit Slam and two other mediocre offerings in Varna Necropolis and Quadrotriticale. The latest offering is a beer called Hibiscusicity (say that three times fast). It’s a Belgian ale brewed with hibiscus flower and orange peel and clocks in at 7.4% ABV. Review ahead! Stone Stochasticity Project: Hibiscusicity Producer: Stone Brewing Company; Escondido, CA Beer Name: Stochasticity Project: Hibiscusicity Price Range: $9.99/22 oz. Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale ABV: 7.4% Appearance: Hazy pale pinkish orange, foamy white head Aroma: Belgian spice with hints of hibiscus and orange Virginia Pour House Review: The beer pours a hazy pale pink-orange with a …

Beer Review: Green Flash Citra Session IPA

green flash citra session

Green Flash Citra Session IPA Producer: Green Flash Brewing Company; San Diego, CA Beer Name: Citra Session Price Range: $5.99/22 oz. Style: Session IPA ABV: 4.5% Appearance: Bright orange-yellow, mostly clear Aroma: Citrus – orange, lemon, mango Virginia Pour House Review: The beer pours a bright orange-yellow and is mostly clear with no head. The aroma is strong with citrus, namely orange and lemon with hints of mango. There is a lot of citrus in the taste, with lemon and orange notes standing out. The body is thin but that is to be expected with a session IPA. It has a good amount of carbonation and finishes dry. There is a lot of flavor in this beer for a session with less than 5% ABV. It is definitely one of the most flavorful that I have had and the bright citrusy Citra hops are front and center. It might not be enough to turn …
